What's it all about?

If you’re interested in a career in repair and refurbishment within the construction industry, this qualification is the perfect way to continue developing your skills and knowledge in building maintenance. You’ll gain a solid understanding of the industry, including the principles of constructing buildings and the different types of information used in building design and construction. The course also covers key topics such as health, safety, and environmental considerations on construction sites, as well as effective communication in a professional setting.

Course information

You will learn knowledge and practical skills specific to building maintenance, including how to carry out:

  • small-scale building repairs
  • small-scale painting and decorating repairs
  • small-scale plastering repairs
  • small-scale plumbing repairs
  • carpentry repairs.

In order to succeed on this course, you should have one of the following:

  • the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills
  • a level 1 qualification in construction gained through a programme such as Hard Hat Ready
  • equivalent experience working in repair and refurbishment roles within the industry.

You will be assessed through theory-based exams and practical assessments.

On successful completion, you may progress to a level 2 course in a specific trade area, either as part of an Apprenticeship or as a stand alone qualification. With employment, an Apprenticeship in Property Maintenance Operations may also be an option.
